Cold English

Detroit band Cold English can teach

you a thing or two about harmony.

You might need two hands to check

off the genres that this local sextet

 shifts through. While one guitar

clearly rocks, the other is waving in

more of a funk direction. The bass

breathes some soul in, but the

drums slam and snap

accommodatingly for a lyricist to

rap some smooth bars over. But then

 things get kind of electronic-heavy

when you pour in the keyboards and

 spacey pedal-effects. This

kaleidoscope of genres blends

together well, demonstrating the

 uncanny chemistry struck between

these six performers (David Allie on

 vocals, Andy Hines and Colton

 Hendrickson on guitars, Alan

Gadzinski on keys, Mo Grier on bass,

and Ryan Brukwinski on drums),

each from unique musical

backgrounds.

On their new album One Band. One

Room. One Take, Cold English is

live and uncut. The album was

funded by fans via a crowd-funding

campaign and recorded live, in one

take. That means no studio smoke

and mirrors, no over-dubs, no

re-do’s and no auto-tuned vocals.

The raw energy of the band

permeates into each track and into

your soul. Any band can move your

body, but to move your mind and to

move your soul is talent. Cold

English is the next chapter in the

long history of powerful music to

come from the Motor City.
