Nick Fügedi
Nick Fügedi is a Michigan-based
singer-songwriter, who is quickly
gaining a reputation for writing
simple, honest songs full of emotion.
He started his musical journey early
on playing trumpet in elementary
school but, after discovering the
guitar, his interests quickly changed.
In high school, he began playing at
local clubs and bars; which
continued through college at
Western Michigan University. In
2006, his original song “This Old
Town,” was chosen to be featured in
the independent film, “Kalamazoo?”
After college, Fügedi decided to
take a hiatus from the status quo
and bought a one-way ticket to
Hawaii. He spent his days surfing
and evenings playing music, either
on the streets or at the local clubs
around town. This was a time of
tremendous adventure and self
-discovery for Fügedi. He recorded
two songs that would be a staple of
his time spent on the islands
entitled “The Sand and the Sea” and
“You and Me.”
One of the greatest joys Fügedi gets
from writing and performing is
connecting with people. Fügedi tells
a story about one of these honest
encounters with a fan in Hawaii. “I
was playing a Kava cafe on the
North Shore where a lot of the local
surfers used to hang out, and I
played a song I wrote called “The
Sand and the Sea,” which is basically
about leaving everything behind
and embarking on an adventure.
When I came back to perform
couple months later, a girl came up
to me after my performance with
tears in her eyes and told me that
she was in the audience when I
performed last. She told me that
my song inspired her to move to
Hawaii. That to me is the single
greatest compliment I have ever
received as a songwriter.”
It was from that moment on that
Nick Fügedi knew that songwriting
would be a lifetime pursuit. Along
with being a songwriter, Fügedi is
an accomplished visual artist. In
2006, he was awarded the Harry
Albright scholarship and was commissioned to paint a mural on
the campus of Western Michigan
University. It is no coincidence that
Fügedi’s art makes a connection
with the human condition. Fügedi
now teaches art at his Alma mater
Detroit Catholic Central as he
enjoys pursuing his musical and
artistic endeavors.
